What to Expect at U-Pick Sunflowers at Hana Field
Upon arriving at Hana Field, you’ll find ample parking. After parking, head towards the Tanaka Farms Hana Field Entrance sign.
To guarantee admission, it's recommended to reserve admission tickets online in advance. Though I've never seen Hana Field sold out, pre-purchasing tickets guarantees your spot. Admission is $10 per person over the age of 2, and military and service members enter for free. An admission ticket grants access to the flower fields, barn area, picnic area, and play area but does not include U-pick sunflowers.
If you want to pick sunflowers, you will want to head to the farm store and purchase a souvenir Keepsake Cup for $15. This will allow you to pick 15 sunflower stems of your choice to put in your cup and take home.
How to Pick Sunflowers at Hana Field
Hana Field is a large area with multiple fields of sunflower varieties. With the U-Pick Sunflower ticket, you are allowed to pick 15 sunflower stems of your choice. You can mix and match any of the varieties, and choose any flower of your choice.
There are plenty of sunflowers for everyone! But remember, the sunflower season is short, so if you want a chance to go sunflower picking, you need to check the available dates online, and get there soon.
There are acres of sunflowers to choose from, and each sunflower section has different varieties growing. It is fun to see the different colors, shapes and sizes that sunflowers can be. Each field also has markers to let you know the name and description of each of the species of sunflowers.
You must bring your own flower cutting utensils to pick the sunflowers. Since sunflowers have very thick stems, make sure to bring a sharp cutter or serrated knife, plus gardening gloves. Sunflower stems have little pokey stickers and can easily irritate your skin. Tanaka also has a limited supply of cutters available for purchase, but it is best to bring your own.
Once you are finished picking your sunflowers, there is a cutting and water station for you to get them ready for transport. Here you can cut your flowers to length and fill your Keepsake Cup with water.
We absolutely LOVED picking sunflowers at Hana Field. The Southern California is great and the fields of flowers are so pretty. It was great hands on activity and there was plenty of space for the kids to run around and play.
